What is Wing Chun?

Wing Chun is a martial art that specializes in close-range combats. It aims to refine a practitioner's ability to deflect attacks from a stronger opponent. Wing Chun may be a traditional martial art, but modern training methods have been developed to make it easier for students to grasp the lessons and techniques. Group classes and private wing chun classes are also offered by instructors or studios with varying lessons for beginners, intermediate and advanced practitioners.

Wing Chun Training

The martial art Wing Chun is known for being simple yet effective. It places less focus on brute strength, emphasizing instead control and proper positioning to deliver strikes and blocks efficiently without wasting a lot of energy. There are wing chun classes available for men and women of all ages, some even as young as 10 years old! It all depends on what is offered by the wing chun kung fu academy of your choosing. One of the tools used for wing chun training is a wooden dummy on which you'll practice angles, positioning, speed, flow, accuracy, and and power. The wooden dummy can also help condition the arms.

Bruce Lee's base art was Wing Chun Kung Fu and the roots of Jeet Kune Do are retained in many of the concepts I teach. I try to keep it simple while developing tactile sensitivity, directness of striking and centre line theory. You’ll learn economy of motion and ‘trapping’ of the opponent’s attack which in practice means ‘hit them while they’re trying to hit you’. Improve your fitness and confidence, relieve stress and learn some cool skills, all in a friendly and safe environment. Beginners are very welcome.
The Wing Chun system is self defence in its most efficient and consistent form. Your own physical strength or prior abilities need not be the decisive factor in a threatening situation. The young or physically weak are always the first targets of aggressors. However, ANY person without major physical disabilities can gain self confidence and a level of fitness which will increase their self defence abilities by 500%. Wing Chun training will teach you to direct the force of an attack against the attacker, i.e. to ‘borrow’ the energy of the attacker, ‘charging up’ one’s own body and then effortlessly redirecting the energy back against its source. The Wing Chun system is one of the very few self defence systems that prepare you for every phase of a fight, using feet, fists, elbows and knees. Instead of retreating, a Wing Chun student will advance and glue themselves to their assailant, rendering them unable to continue their attack. This proximity, combined with well-defined movements, will force the attacker into a helpless position.
