Taking up Judo Classes

Judo, like many disciplines of martial arts these days, is not just for people wanting to compete. Judo classes in London are available for people of all walks of life - all ages, gender, and fitness levels. There are adult judo classes and there are also classes more aimed towards children and teenagers. Everyone is welcome to join, whether you are a first-timer or experienced in Judo or even other martial arts. Through classes at one of the Judo clubs you will learn the striking, grappling and throwing techniques that shouldn't be tried without a qualified instructor. Look for Judo clubs near you to get involved in this dynamic sport!

Benefits of Judo Classes

A rather unusual aspect of judo as a martial art is that you will be practising breakfall skills. That is, learning how to fall to avoid unnecessary injury and how to effectively recover. These skills are useful not just for judo but also for everyday life, as we are prone to slipping and falling every now and then! Judo training helps you become stronger, faster, and more flexible. You will have improved coordination, a better sense of balance, and even improved reaction time. It will also teach you the value of hard work, perseverance, and to control impulse and emotion. All in all, judo training is a great activity for children and adults alike. Tips for Judo Classes

The proper judo outfit depends on the Judo Club you choose. Inquire if you will be required to wear a judo suit (called gi) and if so, where they would recommend you to get one. For first-timers at a taster judo class, you or your child might be okay with sticking with casual clothing such as jogging bottoms and a t-shirt. Make sure to remove all jewelry and other accessories. Long hair should be tied by an elastic band; avoid using metal clips or anything with hard metal studs. Judo also places high importance on hygiene such as keeping nails short, regularly washing uniform, covering cuts or wounds with bandages, showering before class, and avoiding using footwear on the mat. And of course, a bottle of water and towels are always a must-have for any workout.

Judo is one of the world’s most widely practiced Olympic and Paralympics sports and showcases breathtaking throws (tachi-waza), sublime ground fighting techniques (ne-waza) as competitors (judoka) illustrate why they’re among the best conditioned athletes in the world. The sport is an ideal form of physical exercise for all ages, males and females, and in Britain boasts a flourishing roster of visually impaired (VI) and special needs judoka. Judo serves as a great cardiovascular workout, which improves stamina, general health and overall fitness. Physical strength is also improved as a direct result of trying to control and dictate the movement of the opponent and as well as enhanced power. For the same reasons the balance, flexibility and posture of a player will also be enhanced. Physical co-ordination can be seen to develop dramatically from participation in judo and reflexes are also improved together with mental reaction time. British Judo has a highly-motivating and rewarding non-competitive grading scheme which ensures you receive expert tuition without being required to take part in competitions although there are events for all levels of judoka from novices to veteran black belts. British Judo’s motto is ‘Judo for All’ as the sport can be practiced by all ages and official weight categories for senior judo players (known as judoka) who choose to enter competitions goes from -48kg to +78kg for women and -60kg to +100kg for men. Values Ideal form of full-body exercise Ideal activity for males, females and people of all ages Emphasis on discipline, self-control and sportsman like behaviour Ideal form of self-defence For children and teenagers it channels energy and misbehaviour issues into a positive and competitive environment with a clear grading system to provide structure, focus and a pathway Builds confidence
