At the age of ten the flute became my friend and way to express music like a language Music has always been my life and for some time I have been teaching the flute privately and teaching Music in a secondary school now for 2 years. My aim is to really teach the flute to the highest standard based on Marcel Moyse and Trevor Wye. The sound of the flute is a very personal thing and is the closest thing I think there is to an extension of our human voice The Beginning of our lessons will be developing the Embouchure or shaping the lip and blowing across the flute hole Then the fingering of the keys, learning their notes and correct positioning is employed. Finally, Correct Posture with breathing is developed With all the above basics in Place, a foundation for playing the flute may begin. Practice is important but comfortable practice sessions so that one is not too tired will make sure each lesson is fun too. The objective of the lesson is to accomplish little steps achievable steps by setting personal goals 1 Playing a favourite Melody (REPERTOIRE) 2 Making a beautiful sound (TONE) 3 Learn a scale (STRUCTURE and TECHNIQUE) 4 Write your own Melody (Composition) 5 Sight Reading playing a new piece (Reading Music) 6 Playing with another Instrument (Aural Training ) Above are some examples students have set for themselves in playing the flute. The Areas of Study when progress is being made and the student desires to continue playing the Flute: TONE TECHNIQUE INTONATION ARTICULATION - Fingering BREATHING and SCALES - Scales and Arpeggios SIGHT READING POSTURE REPERTOIRE CLASSICAL STUDIES PERSONAL MUSIC CHOICES FLUTE EXAM PIECES MARCEL MOYSE and TREVOR WYE Styles

I have been teaching the flute for over 12 years and have taught people of all ages and abilities. My aim is to encourage students to enjoy playing the flute and to get the best out of their practice time. Some students take grade exams, some have performed in a local music event - The Springboard Festival in Brighton - and some play and learn purely for pleasure or in order to play with other musicians. I hope to inspire you to take your own flute playing as far as possible and to enjoy the journey! I also teach recorder playing and ABRSM Grade 5 Theory exam preparation.
