Thus is the concept of Aikido. When you take Aikido classes you'll see that is a more of a defensive type of martial art. It's a great discipline for those who want to learn how to protect themselves but do not wish to inflict harm on others. Training regularly at any of your chosen Aikido clubs is also a great way to work out and have fun! Everyone is welcome to learn Aikido, even complete beginners.


What to expect from Aikido Classes?

Aikido uses traditional Japanese weapons such as a wooden sword and staff. Like other martial arts, you need to do warm up exercises which is called aikitaiso; this is a full stretching of your joints, legs, neck, arms to relax your body before the class. Bowing at the beginning and a the end of each class is customary. During classes you must have a partner, or will be assigned a partner to train with. 


Tips for your Aikido Class

As said by Aikido founder Morihei Uesiba, “Progress comes to those who train and train. Reliance on secret techniques will get you nowhere.” Do not be put off if you're not an overnight superstar after attending your first Aikido class. Find an Aikido Club that you can regularly attend, and consistently practice. Eventually the movements will become second nature to you, and you will develop an understanding of your own mind and body and how to have better control over it.

Aikido is a defensive 'martial art' where we aim to train the mind as much as the body or purely techniques. Students work together to learn movement, relaxation, coordination and confidence through a series of defensive movements. It is open to people of all ages and abilities and is both a useful tool for life and for fun. Race, creed, colour, gender, size, ability or religious belief play no part in our art, or in our club, so why not come along and give it a try? We are lucky enough to have a very friendly bunch of people in the club and we always welcome newcomers. Similarly, anyone who is a member of the Ki Federation is always more than welcome to come along and take a class at any time!
