I’ve always loved writing and books. My attempts at creative writing began with poems and stories at primary school and continued through secondary where I contributed to and edited the school magazine. As a self-employed tutor of English, Literacy and Basic Skills, as well as facilitator/mentor of Creative Writing, I enjoy sharing my passion and encouraging others to enjoy literacy and literature. I tutor adults, children and young people from Key Stages 1 to 5, providing English and Basic Skills for work, study, life and pleasure. All lessons are designed to cater to individual needs and learning preferences. I began my teaching career in Secondary Education, transferring later into Further Education. After volunteering as an ESOL tutor, I qualified in this area, later diversifying into Adult Basic Education, Learning Support and Family Learning. I particularly enjoyed community-based education. My first writing commission, three stories for the anthology, Mini Mysteries and Kooky Spookies came as a result of entering a competition held by Pinestein Press. Shortly after, I became one of the winners of the first Munch Bunch Children’s Writing Competition. In 2012 I graduated with an MA in Writing for Children from the University of Central Lancashire, having completed around half a novel for 8-12s. This novel, Red God Black God, was inspired by a field trip to Kenya in the final year of my Masters and tells the story of a young Maasai girl’s struggle to continue her education. It was shortlisted for The Bath Children's Book Award in 2015. In the first year of my programme, I visited Zambia, taking with me letters from British schoolchildren. These letters, alongside replies from African children, featured in a book entitled Letters to Africa. I also contributed short stories, a narrative poem and a factual article. I have also written several educational resources. The first, Speaking English, Handling Everyday Situations with Confidence was published by Studymates Press in 2000, with second and third editions in 2003 and 2005. This is a self-study book for speakers of English as a second or other language. Zig Zag Educational Publishing commissioned me to produce two poetry packs, Listening to Literary Heritage Poetry, and Listening to Rhythm in Poetry which were published in 2010/11 as well as A Practical Guide to Workshops for A Level Creative Writing, published in 2013.

Being able to communicate with a person in their own language, however simply, is the key to understanding a whole culture and different way of thinking. That's both exciting and rewarding! My interest in learning languages started early on whilst at school. I studied German and French at university and spent four years living and working in Austria. After visiting Shanghai in 1997 I decided it was time to start learning Mandarin too. It is a fascinating language, in my opinion, full of hidden meanings and with a beautiful script too. There is much to learn! I trained as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language in 1985 and taught English in language schools in Cambridge for a couple of years. More recently, after many years of acting as a "host family mother" for foreign students coming to the UK to learn English, I decided that I really wanted to pass on my knowledge and enthusiasm for languages and become an independent languages teacher. After some initial teacher training in schools, I began teaching languages again privately. I have so far taught short courses in German, French and Mandarin and English at various levels and to a variety of clients of all ages and nationalities. I aim to be a supportive and encouraging teacher who will help you to realise your potential as a language learner. I strongly believe that we can all learn to communicate in other languages and I know myself how rewarding it can be. I would like all my students to experience that too and to benefit from their commitment to learning. I will endeavour to design the course to suit your ability and needs and interests, where possible. I like to choose subjects that are interesting to you for reading, listening and discussion. When it comes to grammar, I hope to be able to show you how the language works and to keep it as simple and clear as possible.
